A Florida man and his grandson reeled in two big ones when they recently went fishing: a pair of sniper rifles. Duane Smith and his 11-year-old grandson were actually magnet fishing, which is a sport in which people cast magnets into the water to see what they can find. After putting a five-pound magnet into the C-102 canal in Princeton, the two pulled up a .50-caliber sniper rifle, Smith says. A few minutes later, they tried it again — and pulled up another one, he adds.
Adding to the mystery is the fact that both guns’ serial numbers have been filed off, says Miami-Dade County Police Detective Christopher Thomas. The weapons are currently being tested and compared to evidence in an attempt to determine whether they were used in any known crimes, Thomas says.
